The Name Game

We're in discussions about what to name the new addition.

With my son, we knew the name as soon as we knew the gender. You see, my husband is a third.
My generally mild mannered husband felt very strongly about carrying on the tradition so I agreed that my first born son was to be James Edward LastName IV.

I put up a little fight because I think we're starting to sound like royalty or at least way classier than we actually are, but I just didn't have the heart to really go to the mat over it.

At least I like the James Edward part, it's just the fourth that doesn't thrill me. I've heard some family names that would only have been used over my dead body.

So this round, I get to actually participate in the process.

I've become addicted to the Baby Name Wizard website and the social security name website. You can track how popular any name has been since the turn of the century. (It's fun, even if you aren't currently choosing a name. Don't you want to know how creative your folks were?)

I like some of the more popular names for girls right now, but I'm hesitate to choose anything too highly ranked.

Getting the rooster for my son's preschool class didn't help. Out of 7 kids, there are two pairs of repeated names (Anderson and Clare, if you're curious).

But I think we might have a winner. It is the top hundred names from last year, but it's not in the top 25 so hopefully she won't be one of four with the same name in elementary school.

We're not really telling anybody yet (I'm not sure it's safe to add a side of unsolicited opinions to my raging hormones).

I promise to share once the name is already a done deal (as long as you promise to tell me it's nice and only talk smack behind my blog back. )

Feel free to comment with girl name suggestions if you are so inclined. I always like hearing ideas and I'll keep my unsolicited opions to myself too.

I've always been partial to Emma Louise but that could be because Emma was my grandmothers name.

I think the name game is hard, my one and only is Katelyn my boy name was Andrew. Her class she has always been the only Katelyn but there were 4 Andrews. Our last name is West I wanted to name her Easton West, people thought that was cruel...
I think everyone always has an opinion about babies names you are best to keep to your self until the day.

I totally get where you are coming from! When I was pregnant with my daughter, I could not settle on a name for her. Thankfully my husband had a name up his sleeve that he totally loved and I grew to love it as well. Our daughter's name is Skylar Maria Hope LastName.

Good luck with your selection and the new addition!

Never tell, ever. Somebody always finds something wrong with your choices. You are so smart to keep mum about it.

My daughters name is Ava. I liked the symmetry, the ease and the no-silly-nickname factor. We have only encountered two other Ava's in passing. One Eva, pronounced with the long "e" sound, actually born the same exact day. How strange is that? But they are in different schools. Incidentally, my Ava likes the name Emily which is what she named her imaginary friend.

I don't have any brilliant suggestions. But, we had a similar situation. Minion #1 was a little easier, because the ZenHusband has a family tradition of naming first born males with the same initials - so that helped narrow it down quite a bit.

With Minion #2, we had a girl name picked out pretty early. But a boy name was harder. Took us a while and then one day, I was just throwing a few names out that I'd just read online and ZH said, "hey, wait, I kind of like that one." And I looked at him and said, "Yeah, me too."

And it stuck. ;)

My husband is a third, too. His name is Stewart. People would ask me if my son was going to be a fourth and I'd say, "Uh, NO. Three is enough." I mean, come one - "Just look at my new baby, Stu. Isn't he adorable?"

With both of my pregnancies we had a terrible time coming up with girls' names that we liked - everything sounded too popular or trendy for me - so we were relieved to get two boys (never had a problem with boy names). But Sarah was one of our front-runners for a girl this time around - pretty, simple, and popular, but in a classic way. I like names that suit a person throughout his or her life, and that one worked for me.

I think the best thing to do is think about the style of names that you like [do you like modern names? Place names (London, Brooklyn, etc)? Mythology names? Family names? Super unique names?] and then go from there.

We like traditional names, but ones that are not over used. Of course, after we named Monkey his name soared to the #1 boys name in America, but that couldn't be predicted. The girl's names are still relatively unused, but they aren't strange and we get a lot of compliments on them.

To give you some idea, the main contenders for the girls' names (besides the ones we actually ended up picking) were Winnifred and Temperance.

I can't wait to hear what you guys have picked. I am always nice about baby names, at least to people's faces...I didn't even make any snarky remarks to moms I know who named their kids Abcde (Ab-Si-Dee) and Nevaeh (Heaven spelled backwards).

1) YOU HAVE to tell us some of the names you were considering, but didn't choose, so we can get a feel for the general genre of baby names you like!

2) The repeated names were Anderson and Clare???? This astounds me because those don't seem like super common names. (Of course, I am biased and more prone to being worried about this as I have a little Claire at home!)

(And back when I was in school, I was the only Abby/Abigail and I was often teased for having an old "first lady name". (Not sure why anyone thought that would be a rough way to make fun . . .but anyway)

We really wanted to name our daughter Addison but then Grey's Anatomy started it's second season and...so then I wanted Isabelle after my great grandmother. Again Grey's got in the way of that one.

So Cycling Papa came home one day and said how about Miranda (he'd heard it in a song) and I said I really like that. I didn't know until some time later that Bailey's first name on Grey's? Miranda. Oh well!

We never had girls, but if we did, her name would have been Katrina Anne D.Y.(my last name, pre-Hurricane birth!) or K.A.D.Y...Dutch descent and all...

You have to tell us what names made your short list, but weren't chosen so we can get a general idea of what genre of names you prefer!!!!!

I'm excited to hear what you picked. I can't wait until you share it with the rest of us.

It's hard to come up with a name that you both agree on AND not have it be in the top ten popular names at the time. We wanted to name Elliot after my grandma (Isabella) but that was in the top five so we named her Elliot Olive (Olive after my husband's grandma). Feel free to steal one or both names. ;)

I agree -- tell us some that you considered and discarded so we know what you like!

And don't ever tell! It's so much more fun to reveal the name alongside the new baby :)

When my daughter-out-law was pregnant with the baby girl who turned out to be Harper, they were struggling to come up with a girl name. Since their little boy was named Phinneaus (don't even ask), I suggested name the baby Phaedra.

"Name them with the same starting letters?" said my daughter. "That's just weird."

Which it was, but I didn't figure two women who would name a helpless infant "Phinneaus" would recognize that.

i'm glad you get a say this time around :) but i agree... don't tell anyone until she is here to show how beautiful her name is! even if it is a goofy name, who would say so when they are looking at her sweet face?! okay... i know a few people who might... but hopefully you don't know them :)

Anderson and Claire hmmm? I wonder if Anderson is from "Anderson Cooper" and Claire is from ... well, I don't know but I do like that name.

Happy name hunting!

We never had a girl's name, (so it was a relief each time we were told we were having a boy) so I don't have any input there. As someone who's lived all over the country, I would say that no matter what the stats on a name say, it's important to consider the popularity where you live. (Class roster is a great idea.)

We have a son named Nathan, and it's never been overused anywhere except when we lived in Connecticut (home of Nathan Hale) where there were tons of Nathan. When we lived in Nashville my son had 3 boys named Grayson (sp) in his class, and I had never even heard of that one before.

Can't wait to hear what you decide on.

I've always been a fan of more classic names, but not popular or trendy ones. I also like unusual names (especially since mine is).
