Thanking It Up!

The Halloween decorations are down and the mood in the house seems to have followed suit.

Both of my little ones LOVE Halloween. And I think we did a pretty good job of maximizing the fun this year. My son was invited to a costume Halloween themed birthday party last Saturday. We hit an alternative no-candy trick or treat on Sunday and the kid got all kinds of goodie bag-ish loot. They are still in a sugar coma from Monday’s adventures. We even visited two different pumpkin patches this year.

But the excitement is dying down and they are both acting a little broken hearted. I keep trying to convince them that a super fun holiday is coming at the end of the month, but they aren’t really buying it.

I really do want to maxim the fun and make Thanksgiving feel special too, but I’m not sure the best way to do it. I personally think Thanksgiving is even more special than Halloween, but my sugared up preschooler isn’t convinced.

I’ve been searching for some Thanksgiving inspired decorations, but isn’t much to be found. I’m now the proud of owner of a pair of turkey hand towels and a turkey decorative plate.

(However, if you’re feeling motivated to put a Christmas tree, there are hundreds of options readily available. It definitely freaked me out a bit to see Christmas tree on display in mid-October.)

I love Thanksgiving. I love the idea of taking a day to be grateful and the fact that it’s a family centered holiday that isn’t just about what you get. I’d really like to teach my children to appreciate the day and see it was more than just a day off from school with the added bonus of pie. But it’s proving to be kind of a tricky holiday in our house.

Due to work schedules and distance, Thanksgiving is generally just the four of us. Without extended family around, it’s a bit of a struggle to make the day seem special. Do any of you have any suggestions?

So far, I’ve bought some Thanksgiving craft projects. I obviously plan to make a special meal. I’m also plotting some new fancy table settings. I think we’re going to attempt some family board games that day. But…that’s about all I’ve got.

What do you do to celebrate Thanksgiving? Do you like the holiday or is it just a day off from work?

i like thanksgiving but not for the right reasons. i like not having to cook and just show up at family's and eat. without all the stress that comes with christmas.

It's about family so I can see your dilemma. Do you have family friends that are alone on Thanksgiving? Inviting those folks could start a fun tradition for you. I used to do that years ago and it was fun. Just a thought.

Have a terrific day. :)

I absolutely love Thanksgiving! I love it for the family, visiting with friends, and just seeing Sprite get to be with her cousins since she doesn't get to see them very often.

Well, we're big "thankers" all year so to me (us) it's not that huge of a day. We do get together with family from out of town a bit, but honestly I could take that or leave it.

We usually plan and work on our Christmas card (family card) the day after Thanksgiving. If I were you, I would try and Skype. It would take a good bit of time up plus the kids would get to see their cousins and family!

If you do not have webcams, well now that would be a perfect Christmas gift now wouldn't it? LOL.

I love Thanksgiving. I used to do little crafts and fun games and that was the day we'd kick off our Christmas movie watching season too.

Wow that's a really good question. Halloween does have more fun stuff for kids. I guess Thanksgiving is more for adults and then the kids get to own Christmas!

Are you on PINTEREST they have a ton of Thanksgiving decorations and craft ideas. We watch Christmas DVD's on Thanksgiving, play lots of games and the day after Christmas decorations go up. Make Santa letters and Christmas lists...

We don't really do much for Thanksgiving other than the turkey.

I do love that turkey though.

I LOVE Thanksgiving. We don't have family nearby so we always stay home. Though my parents have been driving out the past few years.

I'm thinking we're going to make a Thanksgiving tree in the next couple weeks. Have the kids write on paper leaves what they're grateful for. :)

We started this tradition about 6 years ago. We prepare a Charlie Brown Thanksgiving dinner for lunch. The first year we actually tricked my Autistic son and we caught it all on tape. Now we just assign someone to be Peppermint Patty and we get to check out their awesome acting skills. The kids love it! Chocolate pudding, toast, popcorn and pretzels for lunch, and it keeps the natives from getting restless until the main meal is done. We also make place settings and color pictures. I love the family part the best!

yeah, I'm struggling with this as well. I refuse to put any christmas decorations up because I want to focus on thanksgiving, not let it pass by because I'm too focused on another holiday.

let me know what you figure out. i need some idea on how to teach cooper about thanksgiving.

I always think Thanksgiving gets the shaft! It goes right from Halloween to Christmas. We made these placemats last year by weaving paper and then decorating them and it was really fun. Not sure if this is too hard for your kids or not. The Thanksgiving parade on TV is fun to watch too.
