Operation Remove the Excess

So blog...you might be wondering what the heck I've been doing lately, since it's obviously not blogging.
Well, I have been busy chasing these two around. The big one has decided to get into a bit of preschool trouble again and the little one is exploring the joys of being two, which appear to include all manner of throwing - objects and fits.

But what's really has been distracting me is my house.  Or rather all the stuff that's inside my house.  There is nothing like the avalanche of new possessions from the holidays to work me into a decluttering frenzy.  I've been sorting, organizing and donating like a mad thing this past month.

I think the highlight was discovering not one, but two giant warehouse store size containers of mustard that had been expired for more than two years.  We moved about a year ago so this means we MOVED giant expired mustard...I think that's a crystal clear sign that a little decluttering and reorg is order.

So I've gotten rid of a ton of stuff.  I've gone through the kids' outgrown clothes, the toy stash, my closet, my childhood stuff, the whole kitchen, my desk (which was slightly horrifying) and everything else I thought I could get away with without driving my poor husband crazy.

I have also bought a handful of "organizing" stuff.  I've bought some files folders and magazine racks and that sort of these, but this is my favorite project so far.
I'm a big fan of earrings, but all my jewelry was shoved into a little jewelery box and I ended up only wearing two pairs on top. But now all my favorite jewelry is easily accessible! (My horrible photography doesn't do this jewelry tree justice, trust me in real life it's a beauty.)

I once read a organizing ideas book that suggested you arrange your clothing and accessories so that they look like a boutique.  It sounds silly, but I've been experimenting with the concept and I am  now a believer.  Every morning I get to "shop" my wardrobe, which is infinitely more pleasant than digging through an over stuffed closet.  All my old stuff seems so much more desirable and stylish when it's displayed rather than crammed.

I've also a big fan of this new purchase!  I know it doesn't look like much, but these white doors now hide all the DVDs and children's CD that used to be overflowing a cheap bookcase type rack.  We had definitely outgrown the old storage years ago and had been piling DVDs on top of it in a haphazard, potentially dangerous fashion.  Not a good look and not a good design with small children about for many reasons.

Eliminating the temptation to remove all the movies is game changing.  I love decorating my house in a way that limits the number of time I have to say "no".

It's still a work in progress, but Operation Remove the Excess has been wildly successful this past month.  Our house is running much smoother.  It's kind of amazing how liberating it is to get rid of the extra junk in your life.  I feel much more in control of my world.

Maybe next month I should tackle operation get the blog back in gear!

That jewellery tree does look pretty nice :) I'm glad the spring cleaning is going well. This place is pretty cluttered too. I'd like to think that the mustard was left by a previous owner and you didn't haul expired mustard with you.

Wow I'm jealous....I strive to be that organized! It is a comfort feeling once you get there and ridding yourself of crap! Love the jewelry tree!

Yay for clearing excess! That jewelry tree looks great and I have heard about boutiquing. Sounds like fun!

Shopping your closet! Revolutionary! I put everything in my closet away by color. Then all I have to do is grab the matching pieces. Best thing I ever did. You've inspired me to do a bit of cleaning. My studio is a mess.

You are inspiring! I really need to get on the dejunk and reorg wagon as well, but I always seem to get distracted with something else and forget about it.

I love doing stuff like this. It feels good. And so funny that you moved expired mustard. I would need to get a closet if I was going to try a 'boutique." Of course, there is only so much you can do with jeans and t-shirts!

I love the tree... I have so many necklaces and earrings that are just thrown in a small box or a corner of my small dresser... and this would be perfect. I feel the same way about clutter and I so want to get rid of stuff... Well done for clearing it all up! Motivates me.

I've been doing spring cleaning too and got rid of a ton of stuff. It feels great.

And I LOVE that jewelry tree. I need something like that cause my jewelry is also stuffed into a small box and rarely used.
